Twenty three companies in the textile industry have been selected to be part of a pilot scheme for intelligent manufacturing this year, according to a recent list released by the China National Textile and Apparel Council.

Intelligent manufacturing is considered important to the sustainable development of the textile industry. And it is hoped that advancing intelligent manufacturing will help improve the competitiveness of China’s textile industry.

Over recent years, an increasing number of companies have realized the massive potential in intelligent manufacturing and started to invest in it significantly.

Jingyi Group, a vortex-spun yarn manufacturer headquartered in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, has brought 116 pieces of vortex spinning equipment in recent years and built some of the world’s leading intelligent workshops. The yarn the workshops produce is popular and often falls short of demand. The annual output of the workshops is around 250,000 spindles, which previously required over 2,000 workers to meet the demand, but now the company only has 300 employees including personnel for marketing and management, far exceeding the capacity of its counterparts. Meanwhile, the added value of its products has increased, indicating its efforts to transform and upgrade have had a positive effect.

Yiwu Huading Nylon Co based in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, independently developed an intelligent manufacturing technology to produce high-quality nylon-6 in a large scale with high efficiency and low energy consumption. The technology was developed based on a study on nylon-6’s processing technical features, its engineering technology system such as transport, extrusion, spinning, winding and elasticizing, as well as the whole-process quality, logistics, and energy management. Thanks to the technology, the company has built an intelligent and automatic production line of nylon-6 filament yarn with an annual output of 100,000 tons. The quality of its products greatly improved, while the comprehensive energy consumption decreased 30 percent.

At present, more and more Chinese textile and apparel companies are turning to intelligent transformation, according to results of a survey on 340 textile companies conducted by authoritative institutions. The industry is now changing from merely growing in size to growing in both size and strength and is seeking to make breakthroughs in certain fields. In recent years, intelligent manufacturing in China’s textile industry has made progress in fields such as generic technology, intelligent manufacturing workshops, digital and intelligent textile equipment and techniques, and intelligent textile materials.

In the future, there are four elements which are key to its growth. The first is to promote the application of the internet, big data, and artificial intelligence in the textile industry. The second is to encourage more textile companies to embrace intelligent manufacturing. The third is to improve the training of intelligent manufacturing talents in the textile industry. The fourth is to build a batch of intelligent service platforms for industrial clusters.

Experts predict that by 2020, an application standard of intelligent manufacturing in China’s textile industry will be in place, digital and intelligent workshops will be popularized and yield fruitful results, breakthroughs in generic technology and equipment will have been made, and the integration between the textile industry and the internet, big data, and artificial intelligence will have been further strengthened.
